James Wesley Johnson, 68, passed away on June 20, 2021, after a short illness. James was a lifelong resident of South Side Columbus. He graduated from Columbus South High in 1972, graduated Capital University in 1976 and was commissioned in the Air Force the same year. While in the Air Force he served as a Missile Launch Officer/Flight Commander. Honorably discharged in 1982, Captain Johnson returned home to care for his parents, sister and brother-in-law who had medical issues until their passing. Although caring for his family was demanding, he found it to be gratifying because he knew he was where he was supposed to be doing what he was supposed to be doing. James enjoyed tending to his flower gardens, and seeing to the needs the wild gold finch, hummingbirds, and a pair of cardinals. James also enjoyed reading poems, his two favorite poems were “Friendship is a Priceless Gift” by Helen Stiner Rice and “Your Name” by Edgar Guest. In lieu of flowers, please consider doing something to help a Vietnam veteran.
